Gaillard affirms economic dependence female slows development

The president of BRA Dominicana said that gender equality drives growth, in a dinner-conference for the 22nd anniversary of that organization

Santo Domingo, RD.- The founding president of the international humanitarian entity Batey Relief Alliance (BRA Dominican), Ulrick Gaillard, said Wednesday that the progress of the communities is affected when the economic dependence of women is constant, and that On the other hand, when people of both sexes have the same opportunities to be creative to produce wealth, the results drive growth and not poverty.

Gaillard took part in the dinner-conference for the 22nd anniversary of BRA Dominicana, at the Real Intercontinental hotel, co-organized by the Canadian Dominican Chamber of Commerce (CANCHAMRD), which was honored by Dr. Margarita Cedeño, vice president of the Republic and as central speaker to Juana Barceló, president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo, who discussed the topic “The role of the business sector in the empowerment of women for the development of the community and the revitalization of the social economy”.

Mr. Gaillard said that this can only be achieved when local governments, churches, study centers, businesses, the nation’s living forces and other social sectors decide to get directly involved in that process. “We can produce changes together that transform our lives and our future positively, however, this will happen when social participation is inclusive, equitable and fair, each one has a role to play in improving conditions for women and girls achieve gender parity, ”said the president of the organization.

 

He said that BRA’s role is to develop communities with an inclusive approach to empowerment, based on gender equality, and called for greater unification of all sectors so that together they contribute to redefine the path for the thousands of girls and women who They are ready and eager to be able to assume their own destiny.

For its part, the Vice President of the Republic, Margarita Cedeño, considered that countries that want to be competitive in the 21st century economy have to make gender equity a critical part of the development of their human capital.

“Gender parity is not a concept, nor an abstract thought, it is about realities that require important actions in the regulatory field, especially in relation to gender wage discrimination and the obstacles that exist for women to escalate to positions directives and political influence, ”said the coordinator of the Cabinet of Social Policies.

A panel composed of Shauna Hemingway, Canadian ambassador; Catalina Gutiérrez, coordinator of UN Women, and Janet Camilo, Minister of Women, analyzed the dissertations of Mrs. Cedeño and Barceló.

The words of welcome were offered by Nexcy De León, vice president of the board of directors of BRA Dominicana and Gustavo de Hostos, president of the board of directors of CANCHAMRD, and included the art exhibition “Camino en Tiempo de Mujer” with works by the Dominican artist Eddaviel Montero, organized by the Canadian embassy.
